Of course, cleverly omitted from Hogue's marketing text, the included paper instructions warns the recipient that some 'filing' and 'trimming' "may be" necessary to make these fit on your Walther PPK/S. Grab your wood file and sand-paper and get ready to become a wood grip fitting expert.
Working with wood for decades, I was not that intimidated by that challenge; only disappointed that the grips needed to be tweaked for 'your particular version of the PPK/S'. Really? For $60? I value my own personal time at $50/hour, so I have about $100 invested in these grips, that, after 3 magazines, started to float around the frame. The fit was initially fine. No problem, just snug the screw a little tighter, right? Wrong. The fit, even with tightening and tweaking, is not good at all.
So, now for the really interesting part. I contacted Optics Planet to return them. I received an instant RMA number. Nice, so far so good. If you read closely, they mention that the product needs to be returned in the original mfg packaging, which was, of course, the cheapest clear plastic clam-shell that everyone hates and resorts to using a pair of scissors. Naturally, typical human beings will discard this type of packaging since it usually causes one to find a band-aide after finally getting it to open. I contacted them, via email, and they replied that I had to "Pack the item(s) securely using the original packing material" even after I explained that I had thrown the cheap clam-shell packaging away. Upon asking them, yet a 2nd time about the packaging, the customer service rep stated that they "Might" accept it as a return, or not, but if they did, there would be a 15% restocking fee. Okay, I don't mind the restocking fee; but I have an objection to "Might?". It appears that Optics Planet has a fairly loose return protocol, only to be determined by the individual receiver, based upon what kind of mood they are in?
I'm done with Optics Planet, even though I have purchased several great products from them. Apparently, their 'angle' is to insist that you return the 2-cent plastic clam-shell packaging that they hoped you already threw away.
By the way, my STI 1911 competition match-grade pistol has Coco Bolo grips, but these appear to be a different species of wood, based upon the vast difference in color.
Pros: Nice to the eye
Cons: Needs to be fitted, floats on the frame, RMA policy
