Randy's Review of LW Scientific MiniVid 5.0MP WiFi Microscope Camera

This camera ONLY works with the included software or the Acuvance app (for mobile devices). While the camera may be marginally useful on its own, you’re going to need the software. The instructions for which were clearly written by ,lsomeone who is not a native English speaker. That is to say: it’s clear to me that the writer was not a native English speaker but, this comment should not be mistaken to mean that the instructions were written clearly. Inscrutable would be a better way to describe them as they appear to be a translation from Chinese to Klingon and finally to pigeon English.
I’m not quite sure that I can prove this, as yet but, I believe the included software disc comes with some sort of antivirus program called AVG. You’ll end up paying your local computer geek to wipe that off your computer. Then when you fire up your microscope camera software, Voila’ it will reappear.
Beyond that, your treasured micrograph will be viewable on your screen... but that’s about all. When try to save your photos, this software sends it to a dark corner in the cellar of your computer and where it can only be found and retrieved by a software archeologist after being buried for several hundred years. No worries you say, you can put it on a thumb drive or email it to someone else. If you can figure out how to make that work you can send me the instructions but, bear in mind that my pigeon English is rusty and I never learned Chinese or Klingon. Even if you could make all those features work, the software is so cumbersome and click-intensive that your work flow would be sped up by having a five year old look in the scope and draw the picture in crayon. And, finally, your file name will be in the following format: yyyymmddhhmmss. Think of all the fun you can have looking through your collection for a pathology photo for a lecture presentation..
Don’t waste your money on this equipment or software!
Pros:
  • The WiFi feature has potential
Cons:
  • everything else
