I bought this reel for the surf, throwing plugs on a 9ft St. Croix Mojo Surf. My other surf reels are slammers and spinfishers that have seals, and was worried that the open design of the Clash may not be a good fit for the surf and better suited for inshore, along with my other smaller clash reels (2500). However, this reel has done an amazing job and handles large lures very well and I love the size/weight of this reel in the role I'm using it in. Some may consider it slightly small for the surf, but I tend to prefer smaller reels than most in almost all applications. I can assure you that the 5000 clash and the 9ft Mojo pair together very well. For maintenance, I hose down all my reels after each use and lubricate when needed, so I hope I can keep this reel in good condition for a long time. If I notice any signs of corrosion, I'll re-purpose it for pier/jetty/heavy inshore fishing, but after several outings, I feel confident that this reel will be just fine for surf as long as I continue to do my part. The 2500 size reel that I have is just as (or more-so even) impressive. It is small and lightweight but is a beast of a reel at the same time. It is perfect for targeting snook, reds, trout, flounder, etc and has plenty of power to land bull reds if you work the fish. Penn gets alot of grief for the cheap offerings they've put out recently that don't stand up to the Penn name we're used to, but the Clash lineup is a great offering from Penn and I feel they are more on par with the reliable, work-horse brand that I expect from the company. I highly recommend any model in the Clash lineup.
