Dylan Huddle's Review of Ulfhednar Tripod Mini with Ballhead

I took a gamble on purchasing this tripod with relatively little product info. With virtually no description available even from the manufacturers catalog I guessed it was a 50/50 shot wether or not it would be worth while or a send back. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and surpassed even the most optimistic of my expectations. The design is qualitatively focused. At this price point high build quality necessitates a trade off in the breadth of features, but it makes up for lack of sophistication with a strong emphasis on sturdiness and stability. You only get two height settings determined by locking lugs and sliding tabs at the central leg joints. The ball head is a little bit trickier to use than something with a pan head, but it's cost effective and very stable. I mounted a full sized Kowa tsn-884 with camera mount and a DSLR (dramatically more mass than I would expect it to stabilize) and the ball head was capable of holding the whole rig rock steady without difficulty at both height settings. For its size and application I would argue that a more flexible/adjustable design would have limited benefit and the range of adjustment available to the user is adequate for most tasks. I find the stability it offers to be of greater benefit than additional features and appreciate the simplicity and ruggedness of the design. If you want a low profile scope for prone/table top shooting or digiscoping this is a very good option.
Pros:
  • Sturdy
  • cost effecitve
  • Stable and robust
  • light but solid
Cons:
  • Limited adjust-ability
Best Used for:
  • Spotting
  • Digiscoping
  • Prone and Bench shooting
