South TX bonehead's Review of Vanquest Gear Dendrite Waist Pack

There is only so much I can clip on to a belt so when I heard that waist packs were coming back I knew I had to try it. I bought a cheapo pack from the big box store to lug my small gear on my daily walk. When the flimsy band started to fray I looked to Vanquest and Optics Planet for an upgrade. I chose shadow gray as it is the most neutral color. I have this item only for a week so my review may be tempered after the break in period.

What's in it? The house and car keys on the little keeper,
The original PST from Leatherman,
A small giveaway flashlight (a mini-Maglite just fits at the bottom of the pack).
My Spec-Ops Wallet,
An all-weather pen
Business card carrier
A rosary in its pouch in the mesh compartment.
An iPhone 12 in the felt-lined section.
Earbuds (not pictured)
The foregoing items are stashed in the main compartment.

In the rear pocket closest to the waist is a neck gaiter, useful when a facemask is out of reach. The front pocket bearing the leather Vanquest logo is still empty; I'm thinking what to put in it.

Why the four stars? While I like the oversized zipper pulls for the main compartment, the ordinary pulls on the other pockets are sometimes difficult to access especially when I am seated. I have to stand up to reach the zipper on the rear pocket. Hope subsequent iterations of this pack will have larger pulls on the smaller pockets.
When I wear the Dendrite around the waist, the belt anchors do not stay cinched. As the day wears on and gravity does its thing I find the pack slipping below my regular belt. When I pulled up on the bag the rear panel snagged on my belt buckle. Twice, when adjusting the sturdy belt, the anchor closest to the buckle came free. I solved this by securing the excess strap with a hook-&-loop closure. Another solution, which I found works better than re-adjusting the belt is to wear it as a cross-body bag.

Guys, our pants pockets can only hold so much. The small Dendrite provides plenty of storage space for my EDC items in a solid, secure pack. Just don't be disappointed if you find yourself frequently pulling the unit up higher on your waistline.
Pros:
  • Plenty of space
Cons:
  • Cinches keep slipping
Best Used for:
  • EDC
