How to use Opti-Logic LH Series of laser
rangefinder/hypsometers
The
Opti-Logic LH Series of laser rangefinder/hypsometers makes measuring
line-of-sight distance, horizontal distance, height and angle a simple,
quickly completed process. Here’s a description of the process of using our
hypsometers:
LH Series hypsometers are 1⅞ x 4 ¼ x 5 inches in size and weigh about 11
ounces. The casing is rubberized and well designed ergonomically, so an
Opti-Logic hypsometer feels very comfortable in your hands. On the left side
of the back of the unit is a 1x eyepiece that you look through.
To take a basic distance measurement, you look through the eyepiece and
depress the button on top of the unit. You see a red dot, aim it at your
target and release the button. You hear a beep sound and see the red dot go
off (both are signs you've got your measurement). You then check the
external readout on the back of the unit for your reading. It takes about 2
or 3 seconds to take that kind of measurement, so repeat measurements are
easy if you want to double-check your work and narrow the +/- range a bit.
The longer the rangefinder is calibrated for (600 yards or whatever), the
quicker you get the shorter measurements.
To use as a hypsometer (mode 3), you follow the red dot button depressing
sequence as with any measurement. When the first measurement (center or at
least somewhere between top and bottom) is taken, you hear a beep and the
red dot blinks to indicate you've got your first measurement. Then you tilt
the unit up and aim at the top of the target and press again. Again it beeps
and blinks and you repeat for the third measurement at the bottom of target.
When you've finished the third measurement, there's a double beep telling
you you've got your height. It’s important to know that the first
measurement is an actual distance measurement while the second and third
measurements are angle measurements and the target need only be aimed at.
The height measurement should take place on a line and a plane (think of a
telephone pole) to get an accurate reading.
To switch among the
four modes, you hold the button down for 10 seconds or
so (there’s only one button for all operations). When the hypsometer beeps,
you tap through the various possibilities, such as distance in feet, then
distance in meters, then distance in yards, then mode 2 horizontal distance
in all those formats and so on.
It takes about 10 seconds to measure a height once you're comfortable with
the unit.
