Not sure why I thought I was getting a good 'ol steel Lyman sight when I ordered this one. I guess I didn't read the fine print (if there is any) that explained that this sight is all ALUMINUM now, and not steel like it used to be.
I am very disappointed with Lyman's decision to make this sight out of Aluminum. It is simply not as durable as a steel sight would be. I can easily move the aperture up and down because of the flex in the crossbar that holds it.
In order to get a field-durable hunting sight, I had to make several modifications to this sight, including shimming under the crossbar to provide more support. I'm still concerned that I will hang it up on some brush and it will bend or break that crossbar right off.
The windage adjustment screw doesn't have a set screw either! What are they thinking? Just carrying my rifle, I have felt the windage adjustment screw turn against my knuckle. I am going to have to constantly check the scale to make sure it's centered.
I waited for years to finally put this sight on my pre-64 Winchester 30-30, after many other sight/scope options. Because of the price, I was reluctant to try this, but finally took the plunge. I am sorry I did, and now wish I'd just bought the less expensive (but more robustly made) Williams peep sight. I knew it was Aluminum, but it's easily 2x as thick as the Lyman, has set screws, and doesn't have fragile parts that can snag on your hands, clothes or brush.
