These Nikon binoculars are excellent for the beginning birder. They are light weight, the controls easy to operate, and the focus is quick. The field of view is is clear and just right for seeing birds a few yards away in the garden. The close focus could be a little better but to get closer focus would require an expenditure several times the cost of the Nikon 7508 binocs. These are great birding binoculars and, I find, very good for astronomy because of their lightness. My astronomy binoculars are 10x50s, heavy and quickly become a pain to hold while gazing at the sky. The Nikon 8x25s are entirely adequate for most of the sky viewing that I do. They have a much wider field of view than the 10x50s thus shaking is less of a problem.
