Jay's Review of Pro Ears Pro Tac Slim Gold NRR 28 Hearing Protectors

I'll qualify this review by saying, I've not used any other electronic earpro than Walker's Razor Slim, and that is a very hi-value, if definitely not equal, set of e-muffs. Prior to this I'd used 32dB-NRR non-powered earpro, as well as doubled up with 30-32NRR foam earplugs as well as used them alone. My review is for this set of Tac Slim Golds doubled with 32dB-NRR foam earplugs.

One area you'll appreciate the (very) high price vs. even the rather expensive Peltor Tac 500s... is the comfort. The earcups are generous for my normal, non-Dumbo ears... and switched off, keep the scary world and its 50BMG reports from three stalls away (outdoors, under a red iron/wood roof) noticeably out of decibel danger last range day -- in fact, when then shooter squeezed off that Barrett, I'd feel the report more than hear it. .223 is a mild pop, and remarkably when switched on, you can hear your buddy in the next stall speaking just fine, just like in the video on the site (I'd noticed it all day, and it still seems like magic). The headband is padded and very comfy for the whole day at the range -- something not ditto'd for the Walkers. They are also deceptively light for their size -- easy to push up onto your head when the range is cold.

My own 9mm P320's report was like a clap of hands from ten feet away -- and versus the Walkers (which are quite a bit slower to react to >82dB than these Golds -- for the price, expected), you don't get that sliver of amplified report sneaking in under the wire, building flinch with every trigger pull. The Walker's earcups are also inferior, even if you wear flat-earpiece eyepro (mine are ESS Suppressors, and I have to constantly adjust the Walkers to seal).

OP's price was far under online rates at many other sites (in some cases, almost half). It was just low enough for me to pull the trigger... but $20 more and it'd stay a dreamlist item. Adding a further coupon code definitely sealed the deal, thank you OP. Shipping was fairly priced and delivery on-time.

A definite must-have -- if you can afford them. You really don't know how nice a Lexus is to live with over a ten-yr-old Camry... until you try it sometime. For me, the extra cost -- discounted to OP's price -- was worth every penny. Would buy again...
Pros:
  • light
  • Comfort
  • Magical noise attenuation w/o affecting speech
  • Does not interfere with cheek weld
  • Can adjust both ears independently
  • 28dB-NRR is superior to closest competitor's design
Cons:
  • Does not fold up compactly
  • Cost very high (OP's price was great tho)
  • Somewhat delicate earcup pivots reported
  • Earcup material does not seem very durable (PE offers replacements)
Best Used for:
  • Indoor ranges (doubled up w/ foam earpro)
  • Large-calibre weapons
  • Hunting (can turn up amplification for each ear)
  • IPSC or other competition
