JP's Review of Sharps Bros SBC03 Heatseeker Matte Black Cerakote Aluminum For Remington 700 Sh

I bought a used R700 AAC-SD 20” 308. The hogue stock was on the heavy side and warped to the left pressing against the barrel 2/3 of the way down. I like to build AR’s so the look and design of a chassis for my R700 was appealing but most of the one’s on the market are fairly expensive. I saw the Sharps Bros Heatseeker was on sale during Memorial Day and jumped on it. Glad I did. Unlike the other choices in the same price range, sub $500, it comes with a hand guard that goes over the barrel instead of just under. I really like this because with the addition of a picatinnay scope mount on the receiver it gives you the option of iron or flip up sights if you want. I think it lends itself well to being a light fixed sight hunter setup or a heavy scoped bi pod precision setup or anything in between.

The hand guard slides onto fitted rails on the chassis and bolts in using two Allen head bolts. This still leaves the barrel free float but covers the top middle of the rail. I can’t say yet how durable this will be over time yet but when torqued down the whole chassis feels really solid. I installed poly rail covers on mine and a bi pod mount and the front end feels very similar to an AR which I prefer.

The stock mounting is essentially the same as an AR carbine setup. You thread in a buffer tube and set it with a set screw just behind the grip. I found that an end plate wasn’t needed and just used a castle nut. I like that you can choose whatever pistol grip and stock you prefer giving you a lot of choice in how you set it up.

The mag release has a nice feel to it and doesn’t seem like it will be prone to being bumped causing unintended mag release. The Pmags I got aren’t dropping freely but I have yet to get it to the range so that might change.

For the price this is a huge improvement vs the included hogue stock. It offers a lot of user choice. Fully setup with a scope and bi pod its a bit heavy but still lighter than using the Hogue stock and much more comfortable setup for my preferences. I would definitely recommend this chassis if your going that route.

My one complaint and its a small one is the receiver attaches to the chassis using two Allen head bolts (same as AR pistol grip bolts) and the front one when fully torqued binds against the bolt. So it needs a washer to keep it far enough out as to not interfere with the bolt.

Also I thought I lost the little bag with the bolts and emailed Sharps Bros and they replied back really fast offering to help. Fortunately I found the bag and got it set up but I very much appreciate their level of customer service. The chassis came in a nice box with protective padding so no worries about getting it unscathed surviving the the trip through the shipping carrier.
