BD Diagnostics uses the disk method, one of the earliest forms of antibiotic susceptibility testing, originally developed by Joseph Eshel. Bactericidal activity of the disk is related to the sensitivity of the organism to the antibiotic. Bactericidal activity decreases with increasing temperatures and decreases with decreasing humidity. With the qualitative disc method, organisms exposed to elevated temperatures or arid conditions within the disk are more likely to be susceptible to the anti-microbial agent than those that are not. Therefore, disks with antimicrobial activity are preferred over those that are not active.
