The bovine serum tube is an inexpensive, space-saving tube that is widely used in clinical laboratories. Manufactured in small lots for use with blood bags or blood dumps, the tube is perfect for transporting large samples. The presence of serum on the upper thoracic wall of these tubes, along with the inherent sterility problems, allows one to reject samples containing blood anti-trypsin antibodies. The tube also serves as an antidote for RPR (radioactive polysilane protein precipitates, which precipitate out many blood borne bacteria). The low volume requirement and single use nature of these tubes make them a valuable collection and storage item. Many research laboratories use bovine serum in their procedures because of the ability to produce and retain sufficient serum to adequately test blood or serum specimens. However, the need for serum in some laboratories may be due to the difficulty in obtaining serum from some animals.![]()
