With its long-chain fatty acids, lactose (a sugar derived from the fermentation of bacterial lactose) and peptone, enriched medium has been used for the detection of hemolytic activity of Streptococcus fetus and other enteric organisms. However, the primary concern has been the growth of certain streptococcal streptococci, which thrive in the fermentation broth. This nondiastatic broth, which has a slight acetic acid, is used for the detection of hemoscopers in clinical as well as non-clinical specimens. Bacillus roedae is also able to utilize lactose in the fermentation broth, increasing the growth rate of this organism.
