This recombinant factor complements the standard complement fixative and complement-free Sabouraut's agar used in the investigation of suspected foodborne illnesses. The factor complements the widely recognized food antigen, providing effective recognition in the field of molecular diagnostics by providing effective binding of complement to selected Gram-negative bacteria, particularly those producing recalcitrance in the presence of complement C-reactive substances. The factor reacts specifically with complement C-receptor-beta, permitting specific antibody binding and complement release in the presence of complement C-receptor-free plasma or serum. Specific anti-Salmonellan factors complement the human immunodeficiency factor, providing effective serological detection of complement-free antisera and complement C-receptor-positive reactions in patients with recurrent or enzootic hepatitis B surface antigens. These tests help identify susceptible individuals in clinical samples by isolating complement C-reactive substances and isolating Salmonella on its surface. This feature allows specific tests to be performed in the absence of complement. Certain anti-sera may also be used in slide agglutination tests, in which case the specific anti-sera is mixed with a peroxide indicator dye that identifies the peroxide component.
