Thauer-Martin Broth is a general-purpose medium that supports the growth of fastidious as well as nonfastidious microorganisms. This medium was developed for the indoleonemic production of gram-negative bacteria. Prior to the discovery of carbenicillin, nystatin was used as a selective agent against gram-negative bacteria. Consequently, the discovery of carbenicillin led to the development of new, fastidious strains of Gram-negative bacteria. Subsequently, this discovery led to the development of new, fastidious strains of Gram-negative bacteria, which are rapidly growing and resistant to a variety of drugs. Generally, non-fastidious organisms that produce gram-negative var. nystatin were also found to be Rh-negative, which makes them susceptible to nystatin.
