Designed for the transport of specimens, BD Transport Medium Stu 1LB 211743 is a semisolid medium used for transporting and observing specimens. Bacteriological transport mediums are designed to preserve the viability of microorganisms during the time they are in transit and are not to be inoculated into a growth medium. The BD Transport Stu 1LB 211743 is also designed to allow for somatic cell separation from the specimen. BD Transport Medium Stu 1LB 211743 is a medium that allows somatic cells to be broken up and transported without the need for a perforated plastic bag. Additionally, this Laboratory Medium from BD is used for the isolation of hemolytic activity from hemopoietic tissues. BD-Stu Medium is used for transporting bacterial isolates from an inoculated blood, swab, or fecal specimen to a regional or national reference laboratory for identification of clinical or pathogenic microorganisms. BD Stu Medium is also used for transporting and observing specimens which are not immediately inoculated into a growth medium. This is because bacterial cells usually divide very rapidly and, once growth has been established, replication of the specimen must proceed very quickly to allow for adequate recovery of the optically active substance. Generally, viable cells are easily maintained for several days in a transport medium. However, some microorganisms require high temperatures to initiate growth and this must be done within hours of exposure to the specimen. During periods of time when temperatures are high or inoculum are low, the organisms are usually killed within hours. During times of high humidity, microorganisms may be damaged or destroyed, and thus, recovery of the original material must be delayed until the situation permits.![]()
