There is a battery compartment just below the light, the door can be opened using a philips head screwdriver.

my 85 yr. old Mom has macular degeneraton and uses this magnifier all the time to try to read. good light,easy to turn off & on when she remembers! Pros: good bright light/light weight Cons: not easy to change batteries
