These hydrometers float to the surface and a special plug prevents them from slipping or becoming stuck in the retort tube. A knurled stem extends to the bottom of the retort tube. Bubble-free or with a calibrated hydrostatic valve fitted at the bottom. Differentially weigh samples to known gravity. Bubble-free design prevents dilution of samples. Hydrometers for heavy liquids are supplied in pairs. Floats to the surface of the water. Hydrometers for heavier liquids are provided with a plug at the bottom of the receptacle to prevent leakage.
