What Should You Know About Buying a New AK Trigger?

Swapping the trigger in your rifle is one of the best upgrades you can make, as it directly affects the rifle’s performance and your accuracy when shooting. While many shooters are comfortable swapping parts on firearms that are designed to be simple and easy upgrades, such as Glock pistols or AR15s, this can be a bit more complicated if you’re looking to upgrade an AK-pattern rifle. Thankfully, modern AK triggers are also designed for most shooters to be able to swap them around at home, so if you know what you’re looking for, you can complete the project yourself. And that’s where this guide comes in handy to help with the entire process! Here we’ll detail everything you need to know about the different types of AK triggers, some of the most popular and reliable brands, and what you need to make the swap at home.image

What Are the Different Types of AK Triggers?

CMC Triggers AK47 Single Stage Trigger Group 2.0Like most other rifle triggers, there are both single-stage AK triggers and two-stage AK triggers. The stages refer to where the trigger breaks and a round fires. In a single-stage AK trigger, the trigger pull is a smooth, consistent motion that results in a break and a fired round. A two-stage trigger instead has a point where it plateaus, letting you rest before completing the trigger pull. This is to reduce the overall pull weight needed to fire a round, and is an excellent choice for precision shooting and long-range shooting, as you can pull the trigger most of the way and let it rest until the perfect moment to fire. If you want to learn more in-depth info about the differences between these trigger styles, check out our Single Stage vs. Two Stage Trigger guide.

While the trigger’s stages determine the style, there are other ways to classify AK triggers that you might encounter. For example, if you see the term “drop-in AK trigger” or just drop-in trigger, this doesn’t actually refer to the style of trigger. Instead, it means the trigger is simple to install, to the point where you just drop it into the correct spot, make sure it’s secure, and you’re ready to go. Not all AK triggers are drop-in triggers, specifically surplus triggers and those made for older models, and if you’re planning to use one of these, it’s often better to have a gunsmith perform the work unless you’re comfortable and have practice with gunsmithing tools and equipment.

Finally, when comparing different triggers, you’ll notice that the blades come in a wide range of different shapes. While the shape of the trigger doesn’t affect your shooting as much as other aspects, such as the number of stages, it makes a big difference in your comfort. Some of the most popular trigger blade shapes are flat, curved, and even hexagonal. The best way to find out which shape works best for you is to test them out when shooting, but this isn’t always practical. Instead, most shooters opt for the classic curved shape. A flat trigger blade can be better for faster shooting, as it tends to rest back and allow you to engage it quickly.

Are All AK Triggers Compatible?

Camo AK47 on the GroundGenerally, when people refer to an AK trigger, they’re referring to rifle triggers made specifically for an AK-47. While many of these triggers work with a variety of AKM-pattern rifles, the compatibility is not as simple as a general rule. Instead, AK trigger compatibility depends on a lot of factors, including whether your rifle has a stamped or milled receiver, who manufactured the rifle and trigger, and the selector hook count. This can make it difficult to match your rifle with a new trigger, but there are some ways to help ensure compatibility.

For example, one of the best ways to make sure your trigger fits properly is to buy an aftermarket trigger from the same manufacturer that made your rifle. This works well because the trigger was originally designed for that specific style of rifle, but this isn’t always possible. Instead, you should scour the information relating to triggers that you’re considering, including the reviews, to see how other customers find the fit and function.

Another way to help determine compatibility is by checking what kind of rifle you have. Many modern AKs are imports, such as the WASR from Century Arms, which can inform you of what triggers work best. In this instance, most military surplus and import AKs accept standard triggers, which is the most basic option that is usually heavy and slow. On the other hand, if you get an AK-pattern rifle that is manufactured in the United States, they can often accept specialized rifle triggers with more features or greater changes. However, this isn’t to say that import and surplus AKs can’t accept specialized triggers; instead the trigger just may require some filing or adjustments to make sure it fits, which is usually the domain of a reliable gunsmith.

What Are the Best AK Triggers?

Geissele AK-X Trigger With Lightning Bow - Two-Stage TriggerUnlike the AR15, which is a pretty recognizable rifle no matter which manufacturer made it, the AK involves countless models, countries of origin, and minor differences. Since the market is extremely widespread, that leads to an equally widespread range of third-party companies that make aftermarket parts. Thankfully, we carry tons of the best brands and styles to help you narrow down your choices, and here are some of our top picks.

First, we start with our top-rated AK trigger, the ALG Defense AK 47/74 Drop-In Trigger Enhanced, which is an excellent choice for modern shooters. Made from durable S7 tool steel with a 4.5 lb trigger pull and a curved shape, this is an excellent trigger for a vast majority of shooters. While it isn’t a competition trigger, it is the perfect replacement if your current trigger is experiencing issues or you just want a little more performance out of your rifle. While it doesn’t have any special features, it is extremely rugged and reliable.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something a little more fancy, the Geissele AK-X Two-Stage Trigger With Lightning Bow is right up your alley. Geissele is well-known for their high-quality gun parts, specifically their AR15 parts, and their line of AK components is not far behind. This AK trigger has an adjustable pull weight of 2 to 4 pounds, letting you tune it to the perfect weight for your needs. It is also designed to provide an easy fit in a lot of AK 47s, regardless of manufacturer. If you’re looking for a competition trigger for your AK, this is an excellent choice to help you score the most points possible.
