Compact Red Dots, Thermals & Night Vision to Consider

As technology progresses, compact optics are now more powerful than ever, packing tons of utility into streamlined packages.  Mini red dot sights now boast longer battery lives and more durable housing than ever before. Advancements in sensors and processors allow compact thermal and digital night vision devices to thrive in modern hunting and tactical applications. Let’s break down some of the benefits of compact and mini optics and highlight some of our favorite red dots, thermal imaging sights, and night vision optics that fit the criteria.image

Why Choose a Compact Optic?

Vortex Defender CCW Red Dot SightThe advantages of mini optics vary by type and application. For compact red dot sights, the biggest benefit is for concealed carry. A smaller red dot won’t print easily under clothing, unlike full-size optics (meaning the optic outline is not easily visible when concealed). Mini pistol red dots are also less prone to snagging when drawn, which is essential for self-defense scenarios.

For hunting, you want to keep your gear as light as possible. A lightweight optic helps achieve that while also providing quicker mobility which translates to faster target acquisition. Another plus is that compact optics help keep the weight of the firearm centered toward you rather than the front of your rifle, ensuring maximum mobility for both hunting and tactical endeavors.

The main downsides to consider are that mini optics usually offer restricted magnification levels and smaller sight windows. You can add a magnifier to compensate for the former, but keep in mind that this may offset the benefits of a lighter build. However, it’s nice to know that option is available if you ever need to increase your magnification in a pinch. Many modern red dot magnifiers include a QD (Quick-Detach) mount, so you can swiftly add it to or remove it from your firearm as needed.

With these pros and cons in mind, here are some of the top compact optics to consider adding to your collection.

The Best Mini Red Dot Sights

Trijicon RMRcc Ruggedized Miniature Reflex Sight

Trijicon RMRcc Red Dot Sight

The Trijicon RMRcc mini red dot sight is the smallest optic in the RMR series and developed specifically for concealed carry. Its minimal design is perfect for micro-compact and small carry handguns, and the snag-free construction ensures a smooth draw every time. The best part is that it keeps the original features and patented, durable housing shape of the original Trijicon RMR but is slimmed down for use with concealed carry pistols.

Despite its advantages, there are some drawbacks to consider. For starters, the sight picture is smaller than the full-size RMR red dot, so you will need some practice to adjust your aim. Also, due to technological limitations, the RMRcc features a bottom-loading battery, so you will need to remove the optic to swap power sources. Thankfully, it delivers an astounding four years of continuous use on the middle setting, which makes that a rare occurrence. The RMRcc also has a unique footprint, but we sell RMRcc footprint mounts to ensure compatibility with your favorite handgun.

Vortex Venom Enclosed Micro Red Dot

Vortex Venom Closed-Emitter Red Dot Sight

The Vortex Venom enclosed red dot sight is one of the newest Vortex optics to hit the market, emerging in late September 2025. Since then, the original Venom red dot has been discontinued and replaced with the Vortex Defender series of red dot sights, which are also an excellent choice for compact builds and feature both open- and closed-emitter designs.

The Vortex Venom Enclosed Mini Reflex Sight is a closed-emitter red dot, which means that it is significantly more durable than an open reflex sight. Since the emitter is protected by a second rear lens, your reticle is immune to dust, dirt, snow, and other obstructions. If the rear lens gets dirty, one wipe will clear it up and get you back into the action. You can learn more about closed-emitter red dots and their benefits in our guide on Open vs. Closed Emitter Red Dot Sights.

While compact, it still offers a large sight window for unobstructed views and quick target acquisition. There are ten daylight brightness settings and two settings that are compatible with night vision devices, making it a versatile choice for tactical and EDC pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Unlike the Trijicon RMRcc, it has a side-loading battery and powers on and off through motion activation to ensure an extra-long battery life (up to 20,000 hours). The Vortex Venom enclosed red dot also has a lower price tag compared to its competitors, making it a viable choice for anyone seeking a mini optic with full-size durability.

The Best Mini Thermal Sights & Clip-On Scopes

Holosun DRS-TH (Digital Reflex Sight - Thermal)

Holosun Thermal DRS Weapon Sight

Man, optic technology has come a long way. The Holosun DRS thermal sight seamlessly blends a red dot sight with a thermal overlay to create a one-of-a-kind optic, especially at its price point.  This Holosun thermal sight is incredibly versatile, as you can flip down the front lens cap to use it as a traditional red dot optic. The red dot sight offers 50,000 hours of runtime, while thermal sensor provides 10 hours of battery life and can be easily charged with the included USB cable.

The Holosun DRS thermal optic puts you in control of the hunt, offering their signature Multi-Reticle System (MRS) and white hot, black hot, outline, and highlight modes for a personalized shooting experience. Like a high-quality thermal scope, you’ll get digital image and video recording with onboard data storage to capture every moment. The Holosun DRS thermal sight also features their Shake Awake Technology to conserve battery life. It is also built with multilayer reflective glass for elite durability and clarity.

If you have the budget for it, this Holosun thermal sight is just as fun as it is useful. Our customers highly recommend it, and you’ll see why once you try it for yourself. There is also a night vision version of the optic, the Holosun DRS-NV, that is basically the same optic except it uses a night vision overlay. Make sure to check it out if night vision better suits your needs.

Nitehog Viper 35 Thermal Clip-On Scope

Nitehog Viper Thermal Clip-On Scope

The Nitehog Viper 35 is one of the lightest, most compact thermal imaging optics on the market. Its ultra low-profile clip-on design works seamlessly with your daytime optic. Best of all, you don’t have to re-zero your rifle every time you switch scopes, allowing you to easily shift between daytime deer hunts and nighttime hog hunting.

Don’t let the size fool you. These thermal clip-on scopes boast a detection range up to 1,380 meters (~4,527 feet) and feature their A-Core thermal module and Nitehog Image Razor technology that provide clear, sharp visibility in rain, fog, snow, and complete darkness. There are six image modes to choose from, making every environment and situation viable for the hunt. Plus, the rugged magnesium alloy housing and water-resistant construction hold up in the harshest conditions.

The only downside is that it offers five hours of runtime, but thankfully, they include an extra battery pack so that you can easily swap power sources, ensuring at least 10 total hours of battery life for the hunt without charging the packs.

The Best Compact Night Vision Clip-On Scope

Armasight CO-Mini Gen 3 Bravo Night Vision Clip-On

Armasight CO-Mini Brave Night Vision Clip-On Scope

The Armasight CO-Mini Bravo Gen 3 Compact Clip-On Night Vision Scope easily converts daytime LPVO optics and night vision-compatible red dot sights into a night vision sight for predator hunting and tactical use. It uses a quick-release mount that allows you to easily attach or remove the NV optic without requiring tools. Another big benefit is that you don’t need to re-zero your existing optic. A simple button press wakes the optic from standby mode, greatly conserving battery life (which already provides 24 hours of runtime on a single AA battery or 45 hours with the included CR123A battery).

Each device includes an IR850-XLR Long Range IR Illuminator to enhance your view in even the darkest environments. It features a bright light cut-off to protect your vision, manual gain control, and a battery life indicator in your field of view (FOV) to ensure you never run out of power during crucial moments. The Armasight CO-Mini Bravo is one of the most compact commercially available clip-on night vision sights on the market. Backed by a 3-year limited warranty, this is one of the best clip-on night vision optics for lightweight carbine builds.
