FAQ:

What is the best thermal imaging device?

The right thermal imager for your needs depends on what you want to do. If you plan to do some home renovations, you would be best suited with a thermal imaging camera, like the InfiRay Thermometry Camera. This is a handheld device that gives you a large screen to view specific areas to spot thermal inconsistencies. On the other hand, if you plan to hike through the woods at night and want to spot different animals that may be nearby, you want to purchase a thermal imaging monocular. These devices can have either fixed or variable magnification, letting you see thermal spikes from a long distance away.

Do I need a thermal camera to see in the dark?

While thermal imaging devices work well in low-light conditions, they aren’t specifically designed to improve your vision in the dark. They work best by showing large temperature differences in areas through a gradient scale, so it can be hard to make out fine details of some surfaces or objects. Instead, you should opt for night vision if your goal is to make out fine details at night and in extremely low-light conditions.

Is thermal better than night vision?

As previously mentioned, thermal and night vision serve different purposes, and each are better than the other for these purposes. Thermal imaging is best used when trying to determine temperature differences, either in a wide area or a smaller, specific area. This is good for hunting, but doesn’t show a ton of detail on the animal; usually just the general shape, orientation, and size of the target. Additionally, thermal imaging can be used during the day, which can damage night vision optics.
