Prefiltration allows earlier breakthrough of gases and precipitates on the sorbitol or other sample support medium. Enhanced sensitivity of optical prefilters to capture and retain colored particles previously generated in the sample stream makes it mandatory for all downstream applications. Colored prefilters are inserted into the cartridge and a color-change detection window is provided in the bottom of the cartridge. The color-change detection window allows the analyst to confirm that color-change detection has occurred before the instrument has been turned on. This feature prevents cross contamination between samples and downstream applications. Prefiltration greatly facilitates sample introduction into the collection system, allowing gravity flow from a bottle or syringe.
