The gold-plated mirror system prevents scratching of the sample, while the surrounding water prevents contamination of the sample. The oil-immersed mirror system eliminates solvent droplets that ruin specimens. Gold-plated mirrors are a delight to use. But, be warned: the magnification with these higher powers cannot resolve fine structures, so samples must be prepared with large magnification factors.
