Can You Have a Vertical Foregrip on an AR?

The legality of attaching a vertical foregrip (VFG) to an AR (AR-15 or similar rifle) depends on several factors, including jurisdiction and firearm classification. Under federal law, the addition of a vertical foregrip to an AR-15 could potentially change its classification from a rifle to an "Any Other Weapon" (AOW) or a "Short-Barreled Rifle" (SBR), depending on specific characteristics and configurations. This reclassification could subject the firearm to additional regulations, such as registration under the National Firearms Act (NFA) and payment of associated taxes.

These rulings and regulations vary by jurisdiction, so please ensure to check your local and state laws regarding vertical foregrips before purchasing.

What Is the Difference Between an Angled Foregrip and a Vertical Foregrip?

First and foremost, each of these grips has different laws and regulations regarding their use. Please refer to the FAQ above and check your local and state laws for more info.

Beyond the legal status of these gun parts, there are some key differences between these grips in terms of features, uses, and performance:

Vertical Foregrip (VFG):

  • A vertical foregrip is typically a straight extension attached to the underside of the firearm's handguard or rail system.
  • It allows the shooter to grip the firearm vertically, with the hand positioned perpendicular to the barrel.
  • The vertical orientation of the grip helps to maintain a consistent and stable grip, especially during rapid fire or when shooting from a fixed position.
  • Vertical foregrips are often preferred by shooters who prefer a traditional, upright grip style.

Angled Foregrip (AFG):

  • An angled foregrip is designed with an angle or slope, allowing the shooter's hand to rest on it at an inclined angle.
  • It attaches to the underside of the firearm's handguard or rail system, similar to a vertical foregrip.
  • The angled design encourages a more natural wrist position, promoting a more ergonomic grip.
  • Angled foregrips are often favored by shooters who prefer a more relaxed grip or who use modern shooting techniques that involve a more neutral wrist angle.
  • They may also be preferred for situations where the shooter frequently transitions between shooting positions or needs to quickly adjust their grip.

Are Vertical or Angled Foregrips Better?

The best type of AR foregrip depends on your personal preferences, shooting style, and context of use. Here are a few benefits of each to help you decide which one is right for you:

Vertical Foregrips (VFG):

  • Stability: Vertical foregrips provide a more stable platform for gripping the firearm due to their upright orientation. This stability can be beneficial for shooters engaging in rapid fire or shooting from a fixed position.
  • Traditional Grip: Shooters who are accustomed to a traditional grip style or who prefer a more upright hand position may find vertical foregrips more comfortable and intuitive.
  • Precision: Some shooters believe that a vertical grip allows for more precise control over the firearm, particularly during aimed or precision shooting.

Angled Foregrips (AFG):

  • Ergonomics: Angled foregrips are designed to promote a more natural wrist angle, potentially reducing strain and fatigue during prolonged shooting sessions. This ergonomic advantage can be particularly beneficial for shooters who need to maintain control over their firearm for extended periods.
  • Versatility: The inclined angle of angled foregrips may facilitate smoother transitions between shooting positions and allow for more flexibility in grip adjustment. This versatility can be advantageous in dynamic shooting scenarios or when quickly transitioning between targets.
  • Modern Shooting Techniques: Shooters who employ modern shooting techniques, such as the "thumb-over-bore" grip, may find that an angled foregrip complements their preferred grip style better than a vertical foregrip.
