In-line rifles are the modern form of muzzleloaders and are like rifles in this respect. You generally get a better fit and finish with higher-end guns. The most important thing to do is look them over and decide what your price range is for what you want.

Black powder is an old propellant, formed from a blend of natural ingredients: sulfur, potassium nitrate, and charcoal. Pyrodex is the most common "black powder substitute." It is really the only synthetic black powder "performance" substitute in common use. And for these substances that make shooting possible, you'll need a blackpowder cleaning kit. In-line muzzleloaders blur the line between the so-called primitive black powder firearm and today's smokeless cartridge rifles.

What is the effective range of a black powder rifle?

Most muzzleloaders and black powder rifles have an effective range of about 100 yards. Depending on the muzzleloading rifle, bullets, and black powder you’re using, you may be able to stretch that out to 150 yards. Muzzleloader Rifle Scopes will really help up your game for accuracy, even at maximum ranges.

Do I have to clean my muzzleloader after every shot?

It is not necessary to clean your muzzleloader between every single shot, but you will find after just a few rounds that it is harder to load the ball because a large amount of fouling builds up quickly from black powder. To solve this, run a dry patch or wet patch through the barrel with a cleaning jag between shots. You don’t need to deep-clean it, just running a quick swab-through will do it.
