Comb electrodes measure the salinity or dissolved oxygen content of the sample. The more specific, electrodes are of silver (Ag) construction, i.e., they contain silver ions (Cations) which are dissolved in the medium (e.g., water). The more specific the medium, such as aqueous solution or water, the greater the conductivity of the electrode (i.e., the more the ion exchange takes place). Silver electrodes also have a slightly increased capacity or "turn on" current, which means that as more and more current flows through the electrode, the greater the potential drop across the entire pH electrode surface. The larger the gap between the electrode and the media, the less effective the current flow rate.
