Solid stoppers match the color, but are slightly thicker than the standard stoppers. Their consistency, resembling slightly less than pure rubber, allow them to be used in distillation procedures where a degree of vacuum or ebullience cannot be achieved. Stoppers are excellent for distillation cylinders, flasks, and test tubes. When the need exists for a stopper, it is necessary to differentiate between normal and solid stoppers. Generally, it is necessary to use a funnel with a stopper or use a muslce grip to drive the stopper into the funnel or vice versa. The funnels supplied with stoppers are suitable only for use with silica gels as the stoppers tend to melt during distillations.
