People are using the term "rimfire" when they mean rimmed case. Problem solved...you are welcome.

TLDR: 45 colt and 45 long colt is the exact same cartridge. Way back when the army had single action army revolvers and Smith and wesson schofield revolvers then both fire 45 caliber rounds. However despite the army requesting that S&W chamber their revolvers in 45 colt for ammo compatibility, they did not want to chamber in a round created by a competitor so they chambered for the shorter 45 schofield round. The soldiers began referring to the 45 colt as long 45, eventually that evolved into the round being referred to as 45 colt and 45 long colt. There Some purists insist the designation is and always has been 45 colt and refuse to recognize the "long". But the reality is, both names are used interchangeably.

Regarding two answers about this 45 ammo, am I misunderstanding something? Please forgive my ignorance if that is the case, but the . 45 Colt ammo I use in my SAA is not rimfire, it is center-fire ammo. Maybe I'm missing something here, please let me know if I'm mistaken.

yes, way back in the day there were 45 caliber rifles and 45 caliber revolvers and then they came out with a 45 caliber semi-automatic. the 45 Colt and the 45 Long Colt are rimfire cartridges or the ACP does not have the rim and therefore would not fit in the chamber of revolver or the rifle appropriately. at least that's what I've just read through numerous resources through google.
