Does the scope not already have a built in range finder? I thought it did, and I'm trying to understand the use of the range finder accessory.

This does have a built in range finder. It is to identify target distance so you can compensate for bullet drop.

I’m buying my first thermal scope. Usually the thermals have an eyecup. Is there a disadvantage to not having an eyecup with this scope?

The design of the ATN Thor 4 removes the need for an eyecup, instead it works like a normal rifle scope eyepiece.
