The built-in rangefinder is not a traditional rangefinder that uses a timed reflection of a laser. The rangefinder works my marking the top and bottom of the animal (two button presses) to calculate distance.

If you would like a compatible traditional laser rangefinder, the ATN
ATN Auxiliary Ballistic Laser 1000 gives you a handsfree solution This rangefinder will work both day and night, and is ABL to provide you with the freedom to range your target and adjust your point of impact within seconds - all functions are controlled from your ATN Smart HD scope after you pair the Auxiliary Ballistic Laser to it. This rangefinder has a range of up to 1,000 yards, is Hands Free and will work with ATN's X-Sight II, X-Sight 4k and Thor 4 Thermal Scopes.

The range finder is a formula. You decide what you can distinguish as height at distance. In otherwords, you know that your buddy is exactly 6 ft tall. You send him into the field at 50, 100, 150, --- up to 600 yards away. Using the Range Finding function you practice what you buddy looks like at those ranges. In the filed you find something that tall, or as for the deer or wolf (presets) you place the scopes horizontal line on top of the 6 ft item (or preset animal) and push the button. Wait a few seconds. Line up the horizontal line with their feet (or the bottom) and push the button again. After a few seconds it sets the range. This is as accurate as knowing how tall a 6 foot something looks like at a distance and using it to set the distance. Of course, if you know what your buddy looks like at 50-600 yards in 50 yard increments you can manually set the distance and let the computer calculate the shooting solution from that. In other words, it is NOT a traditional range finder like those you purchase as a monocular type device.
