Coined by Jeff Cooper in the 1980s, a scout rifle is typically a bolt action carbine (no longer than 1 meter and no heavier than about 6.6 pounds) chambered in .308 or 7mm-08 although other calibers can apply. Scout rifles usually have a forward mounted low powered scope with plenty of eye relief. It is meant to be an all-around general purpose rifle powerful enough to kill anything within reason. Exact standards and guidelines written by Cooper exist.
