will this work out of a 4in barrel and whats the effective range

These will certainly work in a 4" barrel, but probably wouldn't cycle in a semiauto, so if you're talking about a revolver or single-shot then they're fine for rats, snakes, mice, and other little pests. They're not suitable for other hunting or self-defense, they lack the power. In a standard rifle, they're effective range is about 10-15 feet, but you'll lose a lot of that effective range in a short barrel like 4". I've shot them at a soda can about 5 paces away and only had 4 to 7 pellets hit the can, and none of them exited the other side.
