The Critical Defence handgun bullet was developed by Hornady decades after their Hydra Shok bullet, and has a plastic expander insert in the hollow point which is supposed to prevent clogging the hollow point which would keep it from expanding when the bullet passes through heavy clothing. Both the Critical Defense and Hydra Shok .380 acp loads with 90 grain bullets have the same velocities and foot pounds of energy. In my experience after 25 feet the plastic expander is more a hindrance than a plus..
