No, this is not rated for .223/5.56. Level IIIA armor is not rated for rifle, you would need a full Level III armor, or level IV.

From the video's I have watched on youtube, this will NOT stop a FMJ 223/5.56 bullet. There is a ton of reviews on youtube about this backpack. I ordered 2 of these (one for each kid), I figured it's better than nothing. The price for this backpack is not much higher than a regular quality school backpack and it adds protection from handgun and some shotgun rounds. Look for an optics planet coupon online before you order and save some money. It gives me some peace of mind that my child has something to hide behind at least until they find a better way to protect our most valued and cherished asset in the world, our children. The "gun free zone" signs don't seem to be working.
