No, medium would not work, keep in mide you also need an inner belt to properly wear this. The inner belt isn't super thick but it does add up. Paints plus inner belt now puts your waist at a 37 to 38. If you decide to run the micro belt over a jacket during the winter it puts your waist at like a 40. I'm a 36 waist too and my mistake was getting a large. It fits fine but I don't have a whole lot of room to adjust the belt. And it's definitely not enough to run the micro belt over a jacket. You're going to wanna get an extra large. As stated earlier, a large would definitely work, however it just doesn't leave you with a whole lot of adjusting room.

Id you are a 36, get an x-large.The large will be too small. I had to return my medium because it was too small for size 32.
