Why is this .308 Win ammunition rated for Small Game? Seems a bit much for small game like squirrel rabbit or coyotes.. please explain. — 2 Answers

It’s not the caliber it’s the bullet. Actually it’s more marketing than anything else….It’s not a “hunting” specific bullet…Will it take down just about any animal in North America? Yes it will….Are there better hunting specific options? Yes…I use it for practice and training ammo and save the more hunting specific more expensive ammo for the field.

Coyote gets lumped into "small" or "medium" game depending on the marketing from the manufacturer. "Varmint" is usually what I look for in a coyote cartridge. I have so-called coyote ammo that's lumped in with deer and other kinds of ammo that's lumped in with pig and squirrel. Now, with this ammo, sure you can kill squirrel and rabbit, but I think it would be more of pest control rather than food on the table. This round should be just fine for coyote. This is your cheaper varmint round because of its old-fashioned hollow point design (also soft tip - exposed lead tip). HPs (and soft tips) work just fine. They merely lack the plastic tip that would normally add another ~50 cents per round. Just place your shots well. I have shot this same ammo in my 6.5 CM, and it was always surprisingly reliable and had consistent accuracy.
