can you use this on a handgun

This is barrel mounted, so it may not work on most semi-auto pistols. It should be mountable on a revolver though, provided there is a long enough barrel and the underlug does not extend the full length of the barrel.

My range has its benches covered by a solid roof. Will this unit work reliably without direct sunlight or open sky?

This unit doesn’t use light it uses a magnetic field to measure the bullet. It should work regardless of the light.

Does this Chronograph require direct sunlight to work?

This uses a magnetic field to measure the bullet’s speed so no light is necessary.

Our rifle barrels have muzzle brakes. Will this item work without removing the brake?

It will work with muzzle brakes with up to a 2" diameter and 3.5" length.
