Yes. shoe plates are required they support and hold the pistol slide. ( sold separately and are firearm specific )

This tool has a variety of gun model specific shoes available to provide the best possible fit and less harm to your sights and slides. The universal shoes may work, but I would recommend model specific shoes for the best result.

It can still be used without the “shoe plates” effectively. But with shoe plate you don’t run the chance of breaking the tracks on your slide. But reasonable torque will keep your slide in place and keep the slide tracks safe.
