Shooting is as much an art as it is a science, and the general rule is the best of any optic and optics placement is largely dependent on the shooter’s preference and application. While seeking the best height for you consider, the weapon platform (AR, AK, bolt, etc…) and its intended purpose (hunting, competition, tactical, etc…). The closer the scope is to the barrel increases the likelihood to provide a more consistent sight picture and usually a more comfortable cheek-weld position, so lower mounting is typically the default option for many shooters. Tactical set-ups may raise the optic height for a variety of different reasons; an attached infrared laser may block out a portion of the sight picture with a lower mount for example.
The 3-9x44 will need a 30mm mount. Primary Arms has a great selection of 30mm mounts and tactical rings to best fit your need.
The AR Platform and bolt action: Many shooters prefer a height range, 1.25 – 1.59.
Shotgun and AK’s: The lowest of the low mounting solutions. Generally, preferred height range: 0.75 – 1.34.
The Primary Arms, Ar-15 Basic Mount (PABASICSM ) and Deluxe AR Scope Mount (PADLXSM), both have a medial raise from the bottom of the mount to the top and a central height of 1.50 in.
Primary Arms also offers a variety of 30mm tactical rings of different central heights.
Extra High – 1.59 in. (PATR30EXP)
High – 1.34 in. (PATR30HP)
Medium – 1.09 in. (PATR30MP)
Low – 0.84 in. (PATR30LP)
