The groove is spiral.

This is the "rifled" tube. Meaning it has a spiral, used for the .45LC or .410 slugs. The "smooth" tube is for the .410 shot shells.

The grooves should be straight as it serves to stop the wad in the 410 from spinning in order to improve the shot pattern.
