You would install each piece separately. You can keep them as close together as you'd like; however, you need to leave enough space between the magnifier and the dot in order to be able to flip the magnifier to the right. Being able to flip the magnifier to the left will cost you an additional $60 for the spacers. The magnifier has a screw on the bottom. For some God unknown reason, some engineer decided to place this screw in a position so that it interferes with the mount when you try to set the magnifier up to flip to the left.
