Talley, Warne, and others provide accurate dimensions for rings, as well as a method (formula) to calculate the fit. You cannot use the objective lens size as a guide, though - must use the outer dimension of the objective bell, and sometimes on ocular bell also. Even a 44mm objective scope may have a 50-52mm (2") bell - BIG difference.
