Muzzle brake means it will slow the rise of the muzzle using the exhaust to keep the muzzle down. It does a great job on my .308. I'm back to put another on my .270. As far as your question, it distributes the flash out in 3 vents which compared to an unmuzzled device is a substantial relief. Hope this helps.
