This is the preferred method of seating dies for high performance full length sizing using Reddings exclusive progressive sizing stem. The benefits of this method are less case fatigue, less case body wear and higher case capacity. A more stable hold during full length sizing is maintained due to the rigidity of the steel core which reduces work hardening of the case neck. A slightly longer extension (sold separately) is also characteristic of this method as it reduces the work of sizing dies on cases of varying lengths. There is, however, a slight amount of recoil felt when sizing with a standard sizing die. For heavier cases adding the sizing die to the bottom of the longer case can cause the necks of the case to bow causing less full length and top weight reloading dies to bow and bind. Reddings comp seat stem also improves the seating of the case necks by being non-snag and releasing pin-crimps which tend to form crimp grooves. The advantage to this method is obvious when the case neck is not large enough to require an oversized crimping spring. As a result the necks of the cases, and the faces of the case mouths, which tend to be full length, are held open as crimps are opened. A slight bending of the case mouth takes place and the dies are pushed back against each other repeatedly as crimps are applied.
