When you think 7.62x39 mm Ammo, hunting isn't normally the first thing that comes to mind. Remington has changed that with this pointed soft-point copper jacket rifle ammo. The Remington Core-Lokt bullet type came out in 1939, four years before the 7.62x39 mm caliber was invented. The Core-Lokt pointed soft point feeds well in repeaters, including semiautomatic rifles, in addition to providing a 2x expansion upon impact. It's a lead core, jacketed soft point bullet that delivers a muzzle velocity of 2,365 fps (feet per second) and muzzle energy of 1,552 ft-lb (foot-pounds). The quality brass cases are reloadable over many cycles, which isn't something you find in 7.62x39 mm every day.![]()
There are some who say 7.62x39 mm isn't a big game hunting caliber, but when combined with Remington Core-Lokt pointed soft point rounds and used within reasonable ranges, it will definitely get the job done. Shot placement is everything, of course, but ballistics have to be understood to ensure ethical hunting. A 7.62x39 is good out to 100 yards for most shooters, and a very skilled shooter can get out to about 200 yards with one. As a result, it's an excellent caliber for short-range hunting in heavy brush, timber, and stands or blinds. Zeroed at 100 yards the muzzle velocity only drops to 2,062 fps and the muzzle energy drops to 1,179 ft-lb. Once you get out to 200 yards these rounds will come in around 881 ft-lb, 1,782 fps, and drop about 6.7 inches. Zeroed at 200 yards, they'll rise 3.4 inches at 100 yards and drop 14.5 inches at 300 yards. If you want to hunt with a 7.62x39, Remington Core-Lokt is the way to go!
