Freya's Review of 5.11 Tactical Tac Dry Rain Shell - Mens
I bought this jacket ten years ago, and I can tell you I tested it for 100% and beyond that.
It is very well made, it really protects against pouring rain in jungle (tropic climate of Panama). If you know what is a tropical rain - you will understand what I mean. It is a wall of water like from a waterfall, coming at you, and it feels that it would never end. There is no such shower in the world that can be compared with that amount of water that sky drops at you every second in jungle. In normal clothes you become completely, pouring-wet within 10-15 seconds like you jumped in a pool. I was not jumping in a pool in this jacket, I had to walk, or stand, or ride a car, or a motorcycle (40-60mph) in such rain during several rain seasons, often for hours. After three seasons, this jacket started passing water by seams (shoulders, front zip). After three years water started passing through sleeves too, but I'm sure that no other jacket could survive for so long.
Also this jacked always protected me against wind, even after years.
Do you recall about the hood? It is easily detachable, sits on Velcro (and can be folded inside the collar). This element of design saved my life. I was "lucky" to appear with the motorcycle in the middle of a very aggressive group of locals in Panama. They were assaulting me, throwing multiple punches "al gringo blanco hueputo", I had to get out of that situation without escalating it to a firefight. When I was slamming through the crowd, somebody grabbed me by the hood... Only when I was out and safe I found that my poor hood was left there as the crowd's trophy =) Unfortunately, 5.11 doesn't sell spare hoods =)
When I had an instant firefight situation, this jacket worked as it should, and I could drove my firearm without any delay, it saved my life second time.
When it was cold, I was wearing a warm sweater under the jacket, together it worked perfect as a soft-shell outfit.
Rear (back) pocket is really big and wide and it is made for a department's panel (like "DEA" or "FBI"), but can be used as a normal pocket too. A thin folder with A4-size documents fits pretty well inside it, and even stays dry during a mild tropical rain...
It was years and years ago, but I still have this jacket. It is old now, and doesn't protect well anymore, there are holes and rips, but I would never throw it out, I'll keep it. I have a deep sentimental attachment to it. It is really a great thing.
THANK YOU TO 5.11, YOU SAVE LIVES
