Doug's Review of 5.11 Tactical Camp Field Knife 4

A well-designed, hollow ground drop point for light camping duties, aside from splitting wood, batoning, etc. Arrived somewhat less sharp than I prefer, but took a good edge with a bit of sharpening. The handle is well-shaped FRN material, but is relatively small (my hands are medium, size 8 gloves) and folks with large hands may find the handle a bit small. Fit me just fine, however. There is a 3mmx42mm slot in the blade, presumably for lightening, but I'm not sure how this adds to the blade's utility. The blade is marked SCM435 steel, which thus far has held up well for light tasks (again, I think this knife is small/light for chopping/batoning wood, etc.). The blade is marked GTi, which I understand indicates the design participation of Gingrich Tactical Innovations. The sheath is well-constructed and locks up the knife solidly. The ten grommets around the edge are somewhat smaller that I've seen on other sheaths, and may make threading paracord a bit of a challenge. The MOLLE clip on the back of the sheath is a synthetic strap that opens/closes via a pinch clamp, which is a bit different but seems serviceable. Overall, I like this knife and certainly recommend it, with the caveat that is is built for relatively light duties.
Pros:
  • Comfortable handle
  • full tang
  • Takes a good edge
  • Solid, well designed sheath
Cons:
  • Handle may be small for large hands
Best Used for:
  • Light camping and hiking duties
