Greg's Review of 5.11 Tactical Sar Headlamp Nimh Pack
Anyone that looks for such a lamp that mounts on your head or helmet is faced with a plethora of products and prices. I have looked for several years for such a product but was put off with the available choices and prices.
Doing the best due diligence I could, I realized it was time to make a choice. This product rose to the top of the many in a pretty wide searching for quality reviews. I bought one head lamp and an additional, rechargeable battery pack for my examination. I was very well pleased with the product they sent me.
The quality of the hardware of this product is excellent and appears to be up to every day use in a real world. You can read of the stats in the advertising but the headband leaves me with one concern -- will it hold its stretch over time. That is, will it lose it's stretch and become slack like old elastic - over time?
this is an unknown to me and would take several years of testing to find out the longevity of it but -- even if it did lose some resiliency, there is plenty of adjustment and in a very worst case, a safety pin would make up for a lot of lost stretch.
That one concern mentioned, I would not even think of it as a consideration in the value of this product. I am exceedingly happy with the quality I have received. The two modes of use are perfect for every day use -- two levels of flood and two levels of beam. The low mode of flood is very well suited to reading while quietly sitting out a power outage. Both flood beams are equally well suited to walking in the woods or to the barn on the darkest night safely. The entire product is weather resistant.
Having both battery backs, one with AA batteries (comes with Duracell Coppertop batteries but in reality, using rechargeable would be more practical) and a rechargeable NiMH battery pack, I feel I have filled the nitch in my preparations for spotty power availability if it ever comes to that.
Lastly, as I have personally tested and approved of the product, I bought another complete set up for every member of my household. They will stay in abeyance waiting for any time of need for us.
