Legacy Reviewer's Review of Aimpoint Comp C3 2 MOA Red Dot Scope w/ FREE Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier

After debating for weeks on whether to get an Aimpoint versus a less costly one from another brand, I went with the Aimpoint. The gamble of getting another brand, but ending up with a unit that does hold zero or goes out intermittently (see the various reviews across the internet on other brands) was just not worth the savings. Besides, I wanted this to be my first and last red dot. I have to say, it does not disappoint.

First, keep in mind that these sights appear to be back ordered across the country (as of early 2011), and I waited a few weeks before it was shipped out. Optics Planet kept me well updated.

The sight comes with a brief manual, an aluminum low mount for Picatinny rails that has a single knurled locking knob (so can be contrued as a quick removal type to some degree). There is also a "bikini" type lens cap.

The battery installation was straight-forward. The intensity settings vary from almost indiscernable to so bright, that the dot washes out.

Incidentally, if your vision is not great, especially if you have astigmatism, the dot may appear to be less than round. (If you are not sure if it is your eyes or a faulty unit, try this: put a pin hole in a sheet of paper, and then look through the hole and then into the sight. If it now looks more like a dot, it's you eyes!)At first, setting things up indoors, I though that would be a problem. However, later on outdoors at the range, no problems at all.

Setting up was simple. I used the stock mount since I have a 0.5 inch riser already on my flat top AR. Placing the stock mount on the riser, it co-witnesses my iron sights perfectly (I have CMMG piston, flip ups for front and back from MI). For those who have a fixed front sight or like the "1/3" height view through the sight, try an American Defense or La Rue quick release.

At the range, it took about 10 rounds to get it sighted in at 50 yrds. After another 500 rounds (at both 50 and 25 yrds easily get all 10 rds within 4 inches when standing, keeping in mind that at 25 yrds POI is a tad bit lower than POA), no issues with holding zero. The mount itself got a bit loose, and I cranked the knob down with a nickel and it stayed put.

No issues with the dot loosing intensity or shutting off during use. The reported battery life is impressive, but all it is a little LED shining on a lens, and those things use barely any energy. The intensity level has to be near max for a bright outdoors day, but does not wash out as it may appear indoors.

I can understand why the military and law enforcement use these things. Acquisition is easily twice as fast. 2 eyes open use is the norm. The unit is rugged and so far no issues. Overall, great product, should last as lifetime.
Pros: Quality product, not worrying about it failing
Cons: Included mount is very basic; wished in included flip up lense caps
