Jimmy's Review of AIM Sports Inc AK KeyMod Russian Handguard

I bought this as budget option to attempt to improve the ergonomics of my AK rifle. I had low expectations for a rail that was selling for 40 bucks but I figured I’d give it a go anyway since, after asking around, it seemed to have a pretty okay rating for a cheap rail. It arrived quicker than I expected it to and dropped into my GP WASR with no modifications needed. I have swung the rifle around, dropped it a few times and dissasembled it for cleaning a few times. The screws have held into place so far, although I may add some thread locker just as an added precaution. My only real gripes with this product so far are the finish and the coating. The rail could have used a more thorough deburring prior to adding the coating. The result is this kind of cheese grater effect, moreso than the average rail, that will shave off little bits of skin, nail, or glove to the affect of leaving “skin dust” on parts of the rail upon which skin was placed. I usually wear gloves at the range and I’m not in the habit of jerking my rifles off so I haven’t had any issues with it drawing blood, it’s simply way scratchier than what a handguard should be. The finish seems a bit fragile and tends to scratch off easily, revealing bare metal underneath. I have my doubts about its ability to hold up to anything more than an average range day. I am planning on refinishing my entire rifle anyways (just polished every contact point in the receiver...ooooh boy!) so in the event that the finish is damaged too badly, I will take advantage of the opportunity to debur the metal myself before refinishing it. It’s light and quick and does allow for better control. Time will tell how durable it proves to be. So far, I would say that I am content with this product.
Pros:
  • light
  • quick
  • Tight
  • Afffordable
  • Versaitle
Cons:
  • sharp edges
